Litter in Chapel-en-le-Frith is not just unsightly and unhygienic, it poses a serious threat to our wildlife too. Small mammals and birds can get caught in plastic and cans, and ingest small pieces of rubbish.
Just as concerning is the long-term environmental damage. Discarded items like cigarette butts and plastics break down at an extremely slow rate, releasing harmful chemicals that contaminate the soil. These toxins seep into groundwater systems and eventually reach streams and rivers, harming our local wildlife.
We meet regularly, usually for an hour or two on a Sunday morning, to blitz a local grot spot. We'll share details via our email list and on our Facebook page. Just turn up, or email us for more details. We have regular litter picking patrols. In 2024 we collected more than 145 bin bags of litter from the Parish plus numerous larger items of plastic, metal and other debris.

There are currently about 60 bins all around Chapel (or take your litter home with you). If you find a spot which could benefit from a bin, let us know.
High Peak Borough Council is responsible for emptying the litter bins. They also deal with problems such as general littering, fly-tipping and dog fouling issues.
Please contact Chapel Biodiversity Group (chapelbiodiversity@gmail.com) if you encounter any problems with litter, such as overflowing litter bins, grot spots, fly tipping etc when you are out and about in the parish and we will report it to the relevant authority.
If there is an area where litter is particularly bad, let us know. We find ourselves returning to some areas over again: the path up to the station, Combs Lane, Bowden Lane, next to the High School, Forrester's Way, alleyway between Long Lane and Manchester Road, along Blackbook...
